Each search engine has a method to their madness. For instance, Google, picks up the first 164 characters of the title you insert into the meta data; aka Description Box.
So whatever you put in the description box only the first 164 characters will show up on Google when people search for stuff and enter key terms to find the info they are looking for.
Let’s use the title of this blog post and test just what might show up on Google search results should someone use the following search strings (= the terms you use to locate info- i.e. “how do I complete a description box” is a “search string” ).
“Tips for completing the description box”
“How to get my business noticed online”
“How is blogging a tool for my business”
So if anyone typed in one of these search strings they might see the following show up on the page as hits for a link to my article. Title of this article: “Get your business noticed online complete the description box like this… By E. Michelle Lee, Owner of Exceptions:”PR With A Purpose””
As you can see all of the title of this article will be picked up by the search engine. We came in just under the mark of 164 characters that gets picked up. At 163 characters this article has a higher chance of being picked up by the web crawlers and listed in higher ranking pages.
HINT: Do not put descriptions in the meta data field (aka description box) that do not relate to the actual article. You don’t want to tick people off who click and go to your article to find that is was not anything like the title they clicked on from the results that showed up for their needed info.
You know how it feels to click and go and find nothing that you were looking for. You are searching for an Applesauce recipe and you find a link and click and go to find it’s not about apples its oranges. So you wonder how did that happen. Because whoever completed the description box for the article on oranges key worded applesauce .
So not only are you helping people locate good information they are looking for; you are also attracting them to your place of business and filling up search results with your business’ name on it.
Remember: wherever you have the option of providing a description to your posted pictures, articles, files, what have you; enter your information correctly and with some pizzazz.
