FRISKY LONDON paying tribute to mentor Roy Porter

Columbus, Ohio native James Brittan, while living in South Central Los Angeles, became a close friend of Be Bop Jazz legend Roy Porter. As Brittan continued to record his first solo R&B music project he meets Roy in a grocery store checkout line. Through their conversation Roy invites Brittan to his home to look over publishing contract for sampling by several West Coast Rappers for permission to loop his drum beats from his 1970’s band the Roy Porter Sound Machine.

Roy completed interviews for film and radio of several Jazz legends (Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Eric Dolphey, Art and Addison Farmer, Sonny Criss, Hampton Hawes, Jimmy Knepper, Herb Geller, Harold Land, Teddy Edwards, Miles Davis, Howard McGhee). Roy wanted his personal documentary to set the record straight about his career, which many historians felt was meaningless or over after his drug habit and prison conviction for check fraud. In 1993,Brittan was working as a production assistant for the Soultrain Music Awards to make money for his first independent record release as Thank You Lady by Frisky London. Brittan started work with Roy on the Generation project by the Roy Porter Sound Machine ’94. In the middle of the final mixing on this project Brittan stopped by Roy’s place and noticed Roy attempting to edit some tapes with two VCR machines. As Brittan stated ” Man, the argument started with Roy about the technology of editing video”. Roy stated he was broke from the record project. Brittan stated “Man, you need to get on the speakers circuit as a Jazz Historian and make some money doing presentations on the Central Avenue Jazz scene of Los Angeles”. Brittan further states “I didn’t find Roy to be angry as many historians stated in their writings, Roy just had passion for the music he loved to play”. “Although Roy could be stubborn as hell , until I proved my point on the subject matters by putting stats and other data in his face. Now that would calm him down.” It took 18 years for the project to come to the forefront for Brittan. As Brittan states “It was out of frustration with the many people who didn’t think Roy was famous enough to take on this project”. “What’s famous enough? Because Roy stayed West Coast instead of staying in New York? Or, because he continued to move forward inspite of his health issues or R&B studio work as a drummer. Hey, that’s how he composed the million selling song for the Friends of distinction for RCA Records, “Lonesome Mood”.” This DVD is for the Jazz Historian adding to their knowledge of music. Narration by Roy Porter contemporary drummer, songwriter and close friend Leon Ndugu Chandler (George Duke, Santana, Frank Sinatra, Patrice Rush recordings and live performance).
